The 'Mediterranean’s tiny treasure!' 10 fantastic moments for Malta in 2018'
From international news mentions to museum openings, it was one hell of a year!

Jillian Mallia

We're exactly a week into the new year, so what better time for a round up of 2018's biggest moments on the local AND international scene for Malta?

1. That time we made it onto Forbes

Malta’s WW II history trail received high praises from Forbes, which mentioned Malta’s role during the war. Historical heirlooms mentioned included the Lascaris War Rooms, various forts around the islands, air raid shelters, the 100-tonne canon and the magnificent Royal Opera House which was heavily bombed and stood in ruins for years on end. They’re pretty impressive!

2. We’re among the most prosperous countries

Legatum Institute ran the international survey of prosperity once again this year, and Malta was among the world’s richest, healthiest, happiest and most prosperous nations. Malta shined bright in areas of safety and security and personal freedom. Malta is definitely becoming the place to be!

3. We were named the ‘best cultural destination’ for 2018 by British Airways

Valletta enjoyed its year in the spotlight as European Capital of Culture, so British Airways naming Malta as the best cultural destination was no surprise. They gushed about our “impressive backstory” and rich history. Yup, there’s a lot to get through!

4. That time we received the award for ‘best public toilet’

This is possibly the strangest award our little rock has ever received. The super snazzy loo in Valletta’s Strait Street took home the award this year, and honestly, we weren’t surprised. The décor is like something out of a cabaret club and ultra-fancy! Have you and your tush ever had the pleasure? If not, head on over to Malta’s fanciest loos that only cost 30c to use!

5. That time GQ called us “the Mediterranean’s tiny treasure”

According to GQ, the Maltese Islands are “the gift that keeps on giving for travellers who like food, wine, beaches, and history.” And they are totally right! They dipped into all that our pretty islands have to offer, including a visit to the Silent City of Mdina, and our sister isle Gozo for the perfect getaway weekend. Haven’t visited Malta yet? It’s about time you do!

6. The first national choir

This year the Arts Council Malta launched Kor Malta, Malta’s very own national choir. They will be performing concerts with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as solo concerts and touring abroad. This choir is the stuff of angels! Literally music to your ears!

7. The national art museum - MUŻA

Malta’s National Art Museum, MUŻA, was launched towards the end of 2018 and is every art fanatic’s DREAM. Including extensive art collections, MUŻA is located at the prestigious Auberge D’Italie in Merchants Street, Valletta. So why not pop over and wander through the beautiful exhibition?

8. Being featured on BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’

As the new season of BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’ kicked off last year, the participants’ first task was to head to Malta for ‘octopus’ negotiations. And they totally had us in FITS! The Maltese ladies at the fishmonger’s tried their best to help them out, but that didn’t go down too well with Lord Sugar… Here’s a hilarious recap:

9. One of the best European islands

Malta was on a roll this year with all the fantastic mentions! Coastal Living named our little rock among the top 10 must-visit dreamy European Islands for 2019. Gosh, we’re flattered!

10. Spectacular architecture

Another fantastic moment for Malta this year! Architectural Digest gushed about our islands’ stunning architecture and history (I mean, who wouldn't?). From bastioned forts and stunning palaces to breath-taking views and timeless paintings, our little island is a total must-visit, both last year and this!
