GQ calls Malta “the Mediterranean’s tiny treasure”, full of hidden gems to explore!
Here’s why you shouldn’t overlook our tiny island.
Malta may be small - “just a peek of land below Sicily” which you’d miss if “you weren’t squinting with the intention to find it” - as GQ calls it in a recent article about the islands, but its also “a unique gift that keeps on giving for travellers who like food, wine, beaches, and history,” – and, well, we couldn’t agree more!
With tourism numbers going through the roof and endless locations to visit around the Maltese Islands, GQ says, it’s about time to visit Malta!
The article gives and extensive guide to the Maltese Islands, with travel tips on how to get to our nation from around the world, things to do, places to visit, where to stay, and tasty food and drinks to enjoy - hey, isn't that our job?
“Visiting Malta isn’t a 'post up at a beach resort' kind of vacation. You’re going to want to explore the country and its many facets,” they say, suggesting that visitors spread their time out wisely, and plan ahead to make sure they visit all the gems around the islands.
Obvious suggestions include the capital of Valletta and St John’s Co-Cathedral, which house famous collections by Caravaggio; the Silent City of Mdina which many Game of Thrones fans will recognise as season one’s ‘King’s Landing’; and the relaxing sister island of Gozo, perfect for a getaway weekend.
GQ also suggests popular food and drink items loved by visitors and locals. The must-tries include a traditional Maltese platter with ġbejna (goat cheese), bigilla (a garlicky mashed bean dip, stuffed olives, sun-dried tomatoes, Maltese pork sausage, Maltese bread slices with tomato paste, and water crackers.
Us Maltese are also known to like our drink (oops!), particularly beer and wine. GQ suggests heading over to one of Valletta’s bars for a selection of alcoholic beverages. Locals also think it’s worth trying Maltese beer while you're here, the most popular being Cisk, produced by Farsons Brewery.
The possibilities are endless on our islands, which is why we really can't help but agree with GQ - it's absolutely time to visit Malta!
