With capital city Valletta enjoying its year in the spotlight as European Capital of Culture, it's no surprise that British Airways names Malta as the ideal cultural destination for 2018. Writer Eloise Barker gushes about Malta’s rich history and “impressive backstory”, primarily mentioning the fortified capital of Valletta - and well, who can blame her?

She also mentions the Neolithic settlements around the Maltese Islands, as well as the caves, lagoons and bays of our sister island, Gozo, which she described as “just as special”.

For each country in her list, the writer goes on to suggest a memorable moment, and Malta’s is, unsurprisingly, Caravaggio’s collection of chiaroscuro paintings in the Oratory of St John’s Co-Cathedral.

Among the other top 2018 destinations mentioned, Barker names renowned places around the globe including New Orleans, Barbados, Croatia, New York, Seychelles, Nashville and Mykonos - Malta has great company, and is definitely a fantastic holiday destination just waiting to be explored (even if we are a little biased!)
