WATCH: BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’ candidates head to Malta for their first ‘octopus’ negotiations
It was a hilarious start to the season - especially for Maltese viewers!

‘The Apprentice’ is a business-styled reality game show where aspiring business people compete against each other in a series of business related challenges in order to win a prize offered by British business magnate Lord Sugar.

Kicking off season 14 of The Apprentice which aired in the UK last night, the first episode showed the candidates’ first task: heading to the Maltese Islands to negotiate for nine Maltese items. An easy enough task for businessmen, right? We beg to differ. The candidates were given a map, a local business directory and a list of nine local Maltese items, including a breathing device for scuba divers. Here’s where things got a little fishy.

The device is called an ‘octopus regulator’, and the team were asked to negotiate for ‘an octopus with a 40-inch hose’. This is where confusion masked the team’s faces, posing questions like, “we’re not looking for an actual octopus here, are we?”, “could a hose potentially be like, if you stretched an octopus out, is the hose maybe the whole length?” and “the main question is, how stretchy is an octopus?” - such gems!

After much deliberation, the team headed to Rita’s Fish Shop where they asked for an ’40-inch octopus hose’, only to end up buying a WHOLE octopus.

Let’s just say Lord Sugar wasn’t very impressed!
