Fireworks in Malta have a long tradition dating back to the time of the Order of the Knights of St. John. For hundreds of years, fireworks were used as an expression of rejoice on special occasions. This centuries-old tradition is very much alive in the calendar of village festas that take place all over Malta and Gozo, especially during summer.
The Maltese Islands celebrate the art of fireworks during the Malta International Fireworks Festival, a three-day event that sees the participation of both local and foreign pyrotechnics. The festival has become one of the main highlights in the Maltese calendar of events and it has grown in popularity both locally and abroad.
Gozo will be hosting the opening night of this year’s festival in Xagħra.
