Vegetarian in Malta? Here are the top ten vegetarian traditional Maltese foods to try
Maltese food has a myriad of vegetarian food options.

Traditional Maltese food is without a doubt one of the most unique and delicious cuisines in the world (in our humble opinion)!

However, for all those vegetarians out there, we know it sometimes gets a little tricky trying to incorporate these local culinary flavours. But you're just in luck!

Here's a list of all the traditional Maltese food vegetarians can easily devour.

1. Bigilla

This broad-bean dip is a staple in any Maltese household. Pair it with Malta’s very own gallett and you’ll have the perfect snack for you and guests alike.

2. Kusksu bil-ful

Made with large couscous pasta, broad beans, peas and the traditional gbejniet, this soup will warm you up on the coldest of days.

3. Torta tal-Gbejniet

Most commonly found and served in Gozitan households, this pie is full to the brim with eggs mixed with fresh Gozitan, sheep milk-produced cheese. Some even add broad beans to give it that extra kick.

4. Stuffat tal-Pastard

This cauliflower stew is strictly vegetable based and is therefore also a perfect option for vegans. You also have the choice to add cheese, eggs or sometimes even tuna.

5. Soppa tal-armla

Traditionally called the ‘Widow’s soup’, this dish is ideal for when you have a bunch of vegetables in your fridge that you don’t know what to do with.

Originally named after poor widows who were given unwanted vegetables as food, this soup is perfect way to soothe your soul.

6. Patizzi

Perhaps not the healthiest of the options on this list but can you even say you visited Malta without trying this deep-fried snack? Whether its ricotta or pea flavour, this delicacy is an absolute must.

7. Qassatat

The perfect option for a quick lunch, this pastry pocket filled with either ricotta or peas will have you relish each bite with its undeniable deliciousness.

8. Ftira l’Ghawdxija

Think of a pizza but better. Go to any Gozitan bakery and they will serve you something you’ll never forget. It's usually served with anchovies but it’s just as good without. The olives, capers, onions, potatoes and tomatoes will more than make up for it.

9. Brungiel Mimli

Originating from the time of the Arabs here in Malta, these aubergines are extremely easy to prepare. Usually cut up and carved to be filled with some type of meat or another, these aubergines can easily be adapted to a vegetarian or a vegan dish by being filled with any other ingredients you wish.

10. Mqaret

Although the majority of traditional Maltese desserts are indeed technically vegetarian, we could not finish off this list without including the crispy and delicious Mqaret. Filled with dates, this diamond-shaped sweet is best paired with a creamy scoop of ice cream.
