A bite of Malta! Ftira lands a spot on popular travel couple’s ‘must-eat in Europe’ list
Made with tuna, tomatoes and tradition!

The travelling duo known as CultureCravingCouple, who boast a following of 13.8K on Instagram alone, recently featured Malta in their post, ‘10 Foods in Europe you must try before you die’. Among standout dishes from across the continent – including Italy’s custard-filled ‘pasticciotto’ and Norway’s reindeer hotdogs – Malta’s ftira (or ‘ħobż biż-żejt’) proudly held its own.

Describing it as a ‘rustic, circular bread stuffed with Mediterranean fillings like tuna and tomato,’ the pair praised it as ‘SO light and crispy – unlike any bread we’ve had’.

We couldn’t agree more! Ftira is a Maltese staple, a handheld celebration of local ingredients and simple pleasures. Traditionally made with crusty local bread, olive oil, sun-ripened tomatoes, capers, olives, and tuna, it’s the kind of food you crave long after you’ve left the islands.

So the next time you bite into a ftira, remember, you’re tasting a truly unique piece of Mediterranean culture. And if you haven’t tried one yet… what are you waiting for? You can pick one up fresh from almost any local snack bar or try your hand at making one at home, to enjoy as the ultimate seaside snack.

What’s your favourite ftira stuffing?
