Sweet Baby Cheesus! Malta’s newest food truck offers a burger coated in TWISTEES
From Bajtra Liquer bacon jam to Kinnie brine, everything on the menu has a Maltese twist!

There’s a new food truck in our midst, and despite only opening its shiny green doors a couple of weeks ago, its already receiving rave reviews!

The brainchild of two former physiotherapists, Anthony and Samantha, Tony’s Foods officially opened for service on 2nd October, and I couldn’t wait to find out more. “Tony is the culinary genius, and I do social media, food photography, marketing and customer care,” says Sam, one half of the pair, who’d been friends and colleagues for over ten years and became a couple four years ago. Cute!

“We have a great passion for traveling and adventure, and we both LOVE food! That’s basically how our relationship started,” she says. And that’s how Tony’s Foods was born. “I started taking photos of the special meals he used to prepare for me and posting them on Facebook, and I got such positive feedback that I decided to set up an Instagram account and Facebook page, Tony’s Foods.”

The food blog took off in 2016, and even got featured in a slew of local culinary magazines. This inspired the couple to continue working on their culinary passions. And after attending courses at ITS and continuing to experiment, it was time to start their own little business.

Enter the handsome 1974 Peugeot J7 truck, which they sweetly named Toastie. “We purchased him from the UK in 2017, but he was in quite a state when he got to Malta. He had been a livestock carrier up until 2016 but had spent a short time as a catering truck in London. Unfortunately, his owner hadn’t taken very good care of him and Toastie had to undergo a complete restoration before being fit to serve,” Sam tells me.

“He is a very cute truck, but he’s also extremely temperamental, and a bit of a diva. Very dramatic. We decided to paint him a bright green as the colour reminds us of the old Maltese buses, something we’re all nostalgic about on the island,” she continues.

This brings us to the food. Ah, the food. The first thing that jumps out at me is a Twistees encrusted burger, and I HAVE to know how the idea of this came about. “Simple, we both love Twistees! They’re a delicious snack, and they’re local! So it’s a win-win situation. We’ve always been firm believers in sourcing food locally if possible,” she laughs.

In fact, Sam points out that all the items have a Maltese twist to them. “Our pulled pork is cooked in a Kinnie brine, we use a Bajtra Liqueur Bacon Jam on our ‘Klessik’ burger, and our ‘Fenek Special’ combines two of Malta’s favourite meats, rabbit and Maltese sausage!”

The pair also source their meat from a local butcher and buy veggies from the Farmer’s Market. “Our bread is also made for us fresh every morning by our amazing local baker, Tony’s Bakery (no relation!) in Mellieha,” she adds.

Yep, this is definitely going in my ‘to try’ list. Look out for Toastie on Triq San Giljan, San Gwann, where they’re open from 9:30 until 2pm on weekdays – I’ll race you to the Twistees burger!
