Opening its doors just last week, trendy new café Bohini is bringing a new concept to the rural village of Mgarr – and much to the locals’ bafflement, there’s no rabbit in sight!
While Mgarr may be known for its numerous fenkata restaurants, the new Bohini sticks out as offering an entirely different experience, and judging by its modern décor and exceptional coffee, is bound to become a new hipster hotspot on the island.
Nestled just behind the impressive Mgarr church, the café started out life as a village bar, owner Maria tells me, before it was transformed by talented young architecture firm MMK Studio. Now, the interior is cool and sophisticated, with polished concrete floors and industrial elements.
The friendly owner explains that the café is currently open on soft launch, with a limited menu of daily specials (including healthy sandwiches and salads), as well as a variety of cakes, tea and coffee, while she works on finalising the menu, which will be selective and change seasonally.
As I chat with Maria, her emphasis on healthy, quality ingredients and artisan products is clear – the coffee beans are by Lot Sixty One Coffee Roasters, and the tea is by local loose leaf tea brand Tettiera – what a treat! Oh, and for those who are cutting back on dairy (guilty!), they also have a selection of alternative milks, including soy and almond milk for your cuppa.
Bohini will make its official debut in September with a Bohini opening week, and Maria’s got lots of exciting plans up her sleeve, so stay tuned – as if we needed another excuse to visit this picturesque village!
