The rise of Instagram has brought with it its own particular by-product: the photogenic ice-cream. Yes, gone are the days when we would smash our spoons into the scoop, not worrying about whether our cup would look great with a retro filter or not; or lick the cone, dribbling as we went. Today’s ice-creams are bold and ready to show off their true colours. And, this local ice-cream van – making its way around the Maltese islands – is helping, by rolling their ice-cream in such a way that will have you rolling your tongue out!
“The best things about our ice-cream rolls are definitely the flavour and the way we create them. It's a small show! Every roll is unique, and it is made in front of our customer’s eyes,” Martyna and Roland, the creators of Roll & Chill, explain. The flavours include the Italian Job, infused with pineapple and basil, the Ying Yang, with active charcoal and meringue, showing that trends can be taken to new directions, and the summery Mango. “We use the best quality ingredients, like fresh fruit or sweets, and even herbs, and we mix them with our significant ice cream base,” they say. And toppings crown the piece with flourish.
For a company that has only been open for two weeks, they’ve really hit the road running, stopping in towns all over Malta. “We started our business two weeks ago and as we have a van, we can change our locations. Today, we are based on the way to St Peter’s Pool. However, we’ve also based ourselves at Mellieha bay, Blue Grotto, Bugibba and Manoel Island in the past.”
