Every year on 22nd April, the world celebrates Earth Day – a global movement to promote environmental awareness, protect our planet, and reconnect with the natural world around us. First held back in 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally through earthday.org, calling to action 1 billion people in more than 193 countries, to protect our planet.
While Malta may be small, it’s blessed with a tapestry of countryside, cliffs, woodlands and coastal views that make it easy to fall in love with nature all over again. Whether you’re an avid hiker or a casual stroller, here are 10 stunning natural spots across Malta and Gozo to explore and appreciate this Earth Day – or any day, really.
1. Buskett Woodlands
A rarity in Malta, Buskett is one of the few true woodlands on the islands – albeit man-made in the time of the Knights! Located in the fertile valley of Wied il-Luq in Rabat, it’s perfect for a tranquil walk under leafy canopies, especially in spring when wildflowers are in bloom.
2. Chadwick Lakes
This countryside gem between Rabat and Mtarfa offers a peaceful escape with water trickling along a man-made valley system. Popular with families and nature lovers – and now even more accessible with its new walking trail – the area is especially beautiful after the rainy season.
3. Dingli Cliffs
For dramatic views and fresh sea breeze, it’s hard to beat Dingli Cliffs. The highest point in Malta, this area offers endless views of the Mediterranean, wild fennel and cliffside flora, especially at golden hour.
4. Għajn Tuffieħa & Il-Majjistral Nature & History Park
Beyond the iconic beach lies Malta’s largest nature park. Il-Majjistral is full of rugged trails, native plants, lizards basking on rocks, and untouched views of the coast. A top pick for eco-friendly adventurers – definitely wear your hiking shoes!
5. Coral Lagoon, L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa
Located at the northernmost tip of Malta, this natural sea cave is a stunning spot for panoramic views. While the lagoon itself is a hotspot for divers, the surrounding cliffs are ideal for a quiet countryside walk.
6. Wied il-Għasel, Mosta
Hidden in the heart of Mosta, Wied il-Għasel (Valley of Honey) is a lush, green valley with meandering paths, historic caves and peaceful picnic spots. It’s a great spot for short nature escapes without going too far from the centre of the island.
7. Victoria Lines Trail
Spanning across the width of Malta, the Victoria Lines trail offers a mix of countryside views, military history, and endless walking potential. Like most of these places, it’s especially gorgeous in spring, with wildflowers carpeting the path.
8. Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs, Gozo
Switching islands, Ta’ Ċenċ offers wild, windswept beauty. These dramatic cliffs near Sannat are home to endangered seabirds and offer panoramic views over the open sea – ideal for nature photography or serene meditation.
9. Wied il-Mielaħ, Gozo
Often overshadowed by Dwejra in the past, Wied il-Mielaħ is another coastal marvel that’s gained traction after the Azure Window’s tragic fall in 2017. A natural rock arch and deep valley lead to this beautiful site, surrounded by unspoiled countryside and calm, rolling hills.
10. Salina Nature Reserve
Nature lovers and bird watchers, this one’s for you! The Salina salt pans and surrounding reserve are home to flamingos, herons, and other migratory birds. It’s a peaceful spot to reflect on how Malta temporarily becomes home for these winged beauties too.
This Earth Day, take time to explore, appreciate, and protect. Whether it’s a short walk or a full-day hike, Malta’s countryside might just be what you need to get back into touch with nature.
