Nature lovers, rejoice!

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape into nature, Chadwick Lakes has just the thing! As part of its recently completed restoration, this stunning valley now has a two-kilometre walking trail - perfect for anyone wanting to soak in the beauty of one of Malta’s most picturesque and ecologically rich spots.

Inaugurated over the past weekend, the trail welcomed both locals and tourists, who got to experience guided walks packed with some nuggets of knowledge on the valley’s history, landscape, and wildlife. Stretching from Mtarfa to Fiddien, the route takes visitors through an area that once played a crucial role in Malta’s water supply. Back in the 17th century, this valley helped feed the Wignacourt Aqueduct, built by the Knights of St John to channel water from the springs found at Dingli and Rabat to the newly built capital city, Valletta.

The restoration of Chadwick Lakes also saw major environmental improvements, including the removal of invasive species like the great reed, crayfish, castor oil trees, and balloon vine, which were threatening Malta’s native biodiversity. Now, the valley is thriving again, home to fascinating wildlife such as the painted frog - the only amphibian native to the Maltese Islands - along with indigenous trees like the White Willow and White Poplar. Bird lovers will also spot species like the European Robin, Cetti’s Warbler, and the Spanish Sparrow.

If you haven’t explored the trail yet, now’s the perfect time! It’s especially stunning after a good rainfall, where you can see Malta's very own waterfall. So, lace up your walking shoes and get ready for some valley wonders.
