From rescue to rehab! Orphaned hedgehogs being taught life skills to survive in the wild
They will be released once they fininsh their rehab period

Caroline Curmi

A couple of hedgehogs rescued earlier this week in the Mgarr area are now in a good condition and progressing swiftly as they undergo a rehabilitation period.

Taken in by local NGO Nature Trust Malta, the hedgehogs are currently being trained to hunt and feed independently before being released back into the wild.

Issuing a public warning, Nature Trust Malta said : "Please remember these are protected animals and permits are needed for rehab of injured or orphaned wild protected species."

Also dispelling one harmful misconception, Nature Trust Malta warned the public not to offer cow's milk to hedgehogs: "... this could be fatal for the little ones."

Should you spot a hedgehog in difficulty, please call Nature Trust Wildlife Rescue on +356 9999 9505. Donations to help the NGO carry its important work can be made here.
