Big plans for Comino! Proposals launched for Blue Lagoon’s ecological rehabilitation
Changes include a swimming zone expansion, safer boat docking, and more space to relax.
Comino’s iconic Blue Lagoon may be getting a much-needed makeover! The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), Team Blue Lagoon and Mizzi Studio have teamed up to launch an ambitious proposal called Blue Lagoon Rehabilitation – Balancing Nature and Experience.
The aim is to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Blue Lagoon by healing its fragile ecosystem while improving the way visitors experience the site.
Here’s a look at the key proposals on the table:
- A new scenic walkway – existing kiosks would be removed from the busiest part of the shoreline, opening up space for a 200-metre path with views and better accessibility.
- Restoration of natural landscapes – around 35,000 square metres of garigue would be restored and protected using rubble walls and conservation measures.
- Safer vessel operations – boat docking would be moved away from the heart of the lagoon, creating safer, more accessible zones while freeing up the swimming areas.
- More space to swim! – the swimming zone would increase by 20% (5,600 sqm), with some areas already expanded this summer.
- Smarter facilities – existing degraded areas would be repurposed into low-lying structures for visitor info points, relaxation areas, food & beverage spots, sanitation services, and waste management.
- Green touches – 840 sqm of green roofs, sustainable building elements using limestone, reed (qasab), and locally engineered materials.
- Less concrete, more nature – around 880 sqm of concrete surfaces and unsafe platforms would be removed.
- Eco-friendly food options – kiosks would be reorganised to focus on local produce, reusable cups, and biodegradable packaging.
The vision behind this project is to protect the lagoon’s delicate ecosystems both on land and sea, undo years of ecological damage, and create a space that future generations can enjoy, all while offering visitors a more educational and enriching experience.
The proposal will soon be submitted to planning and environmental authorities, kicking off the permitting process, public consultation, and further evaluation.
Looking forward to see how Blue Lagoon might change?
