Situated in the heart of Naxxar, the Church of San Pawl tat-Tarġa stands as a reminder of Malta’s rich religious heritage. Completed in 1699, its history is documented by Bishop Davide Cocco Palmieri, who detailed its completion during a pastoral visit that same year. This charming chapel has been a spiritual haven for the local community for centuries.

One of the chapel’s most notable features is the stone statue of Saint Paul, prominently placed in front of the building. This statue was crafted in 1770 under the guidance of Don Ġwann Mifsud.

Remarkably, it was funded entirely by the local people, reflecting the strong communal spirit and devotion that characterised the period. To honour this creation, Don Ġwann requested an indulgence of forty days for anyone who prayed in front of the statue. This indulgence was granted on the 17th of September 1770, enhancing the chapel’s spiritual significance.

The Church of San Pawl tat-Tarġa not only serves as a place of worship but also as a historical landmark that encapsulates the enduring faith and dedication of the Naxxar community. Its architectural beauty, coupled with the heartfelt story of the statue, makes it a cherished site for both locals and visitors.

Whether you’re seeking a moment of reflection or exploring Malta’s historical gems, the Church of San Pawl tat-Tarġa offers a glimpse into the island’s vibrant religious past and communal harmony.

Have you ever visited this church?
