Be on the lookout! The Wildlife Rescue Team Malta is urging locals to be careful and look out for any baby bats lying on the ground. While it’s a common thing in Malta for the team to receive calls about baby bats in summer, “the numbers of the last few days are unusually high,” the team said.

“The past few days it’s been raining baby bats (10c coin for size reference). Since 18th June, we received 7 calls (6 of them in the last 4 days) regarding baby bats found on the ground alone,” the wildlife team said on social media, noting that this surge in likely due to the heatwave.

Spot a bat pup? Here’s what you need to do

“Please keep a lookout and if you see a bat pup call us. Please note that local bats are not dangerous. Until we arrive, place in a shaded, cool area, and offer water.”

“These pups are currently being fostered in hopes that they make it to adulthood, a task demanding a lot of patience and perseverance. Hopefully, some will make it.”

The team has been quite busy with wildlife rescues and any support will be appreciated. “Donations are always welcome and can be sent via bank transfer on our Wildlife IBAN MT18 VALL 2201 3000 0000 4002 353 8289. We thank you in advance for your support and help.”
