Goodbye green! Satellite image reveals Malta’s landscape already turning brown
It’s only May, but the heat has been doing its thing.

Francesca Vella

As May brought in some toasty temperatures across the Maltese Islands, a new satellite image taken from space on Tuesday 13th May (yesterday) at 9:40am shows a striking shift in the island’s landscape – Malta is already starting to turn brown.

The image highlights how quickly the country’s greenery gives way to more arid tones as spring progresses into the hotter months. With limited rainfall over the past few weeks, local fields and countryside areas have begun drying out earlier than usual.

But there’s hope on the horizon! A forecasted weather system could bring some much-needed rain on Thursday (tomorrow), potentially offering a brief respite for Malta’s parched terrain. While no extreme weather is expected, a full May’s worth of rain might fall in a single day – a welcome change for farmers and nature-lovers alike.

As we move closer to summer, this image serves as a reminder of just how fast our seasons shift – and how vital every drop of rain is for Malta’s delicate natural environment.

Are you hoping for rain?
