Spring showers! Here’s why Malta and the Mediterranean will be seeing more rain this May than the rest of Europe
Although the first week of May was distinctly summer-like, some storms have begun to pass over the islands, particularly in Gozo which was hit by heavy rain and even ice three times within just one week. The tables are set to turn in Malta too, as the island awaits possible thunderstorms later this week.
It’s not just Malta and Gozo – the entire Mediterranean region is currently experiencing more rainfall and overcast weather than most of Europe, and the Maltese Islands Weather page say there’s a clear reason why.
According to regional weather experts, a persistent anticyclone over Northern Europe, especially near the British Isles, is blocking Atlantic storm systems from moving northward. Instead, these systems are being diverted south, heading straight toward the Mediterranean basin.
At the same time, low-pressure systems from the desert, typically held further south, are having an easier time creeping up into our region. The result is a clash of air masses that brings increased rain, cloudy skies, and a noticeable rise in airborne fine desert dust.
While this type of meteorological setup is not unusual for spring, experts are noting that it’s been intensifying in recent years. Springs are becoming rainier, with longer spells of unsettled weather, and more days marked by dust-laden skies – something you might have noticed if you suffer from any respiratory conditions.
Whether it’s your morning commute being disrupted by drizzle or a weekend hike under a blanket of haze, these seasonal shifts are becoming harder to ignore, especially in a country more associated with bright blue skies and early summer vibes.
Are you enjoying the mixed weather or looking forward to a hot summer?
