After a dry spell of three months, Malta’s airport is welcoming its first tourists today. Today, Malta’s airport reopened with a select list of flights to designated countries. This will be extended in two weeks on 15^th July.

According to TVM, one of the first flights out of the country was to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport that had 145 passengers on board. The return flight to Malta is expected to have 115 passengers, TVM reported.

According to Malta International Airport’s website, a flight from Gdansk landed at 9.23am, with two flights coming from Rome landing at 11.25am. Other flights expected to land in Malta today include ones coming from Santiago De Compostela, Munich, Seville, Dusseldorf, Berlin-Tegel, Catania and Dublin until 8.40pm tonight.

Many locals had mixed feelings about the airport, with welcoming the tourism with open arms while others still a little hesitant about it all.

Malta is a currently highly dependent on the tourism sector and so was badly affected during the pandemic with commercial flights being shut down. But with the country’s public health emergency status lifted, a lot of restrictions have been repealed, allowing both locals and now foreigners to enjoy the island better, while also remaining safe.
