May is officially turtle nesting season! Here are some tips to keep Malta's beaches as safe as possible
Make sure to leave Malta’s sandy beaches better than you found them!

As many of you might already know, it’s turtle nesting season in Malta and all across the Mediterranean.

This means that mother turtles might wash up on Malta’s sandy beaches to nest their eggs until they hatch.

The Maltese non-governmental organisation, ‘Wildlife Rescue Team Malta’ took to social media with some helpful tips to keep in mind during this season.

Such tips include the flattening of any sandcastles you or your kids might have built after leaving the beaches, filling in holes if you have dug any and taking all belongings or rubbish back with you.

It is also important to reduce the levels of white light being used as much as possible when on the beach after dark as this negatively affects the turtle’s navigation.

If you end up witnessing a turtle coming up to nest in one of Malta’s beaches, contact Nature Trust or Wildlife Rescue Team Malta immediately on 99999505 and remove all possible objects that might be in the mother’s way.

In the meantime, make sure not to touch her or shine any bright lights or flash in her direction.

Have you ever seen a turtle nest before?
