WATCH: These charming Yellow Western Wagtails caught refuelling in Malta before their next journey
These birds are known as ‘Isfar’ in Maltese, and they are visible on the islands from early March to May.
Birdlife Malta's Facebook page recently shared an adorable video capturing the charm of Western Yellow Wagtails, courtesy of nature photographer Aron Tanti.
In the footage, one of these delightful birds is caught indulging in a satisfying meal, showcasing its adorable antics.
These petite wonders, characterised by their graceful yellowish plumage, medium-length tails, and slender black legs, are currently on a mission to refuel as they gear up for the next leg of their migration journey.
Spring heralds the arrival of these charming creatures, known locally as "Isfar," as they grace the Maltese islands from early March to early May.
During this period, Yellow Wagtails can be spotted virtually everywhere, their presence a delightful spectacle during the spring bird migration. They gracefully fly across the landscape, often seen walking or running on the ground in search of insects to fuel their journey. True to their name, these wagtails occasionally flutter their tails, adding a touch of whimsy to their movements.
For bird enthusiasts eager to witness this marvel of nature, Malta's nature reserves, particularly Għadira and Simar, offer prime locations to observe these feathered friends in action. With their numbers abundant, these reserves provide a safe space for Yellow Wagtails to feed and prepare for the next phase of their migration.
What a cutie!
