Stay strong, Violet! Injured turtle rescued in Marsaxlokk and taken to rehabilitation centre
All rescued turtles are protected species, and it is illegal in Malta to keep them as pets.
Footage from Wildlife Rescue Team Malta on social media shows an injured turtle that was rescued off the coast of Marsaxlokk thanks to the quick actions of a local boat operator and his passengers.
While taking tourists on a sightseeing trip, Angel Joseph Caruana from Ta’ Violet Boat Trips noticed a turtle struggling at the surface and unable to dive. On closer inspection, he saw that the turtle had sustained an injury to its right front flipper.
With the assistance of the tourists on board, the turtle was carefully lifted onto the boat. Angel Joseph Caruana immediately contacted the Wildlife Rescue Team, who coordinated her pick-up as soon as the boat returned to Marsaxlokk. Volunteers swiftly arrived on site to transport the animal to the rehabilitation centre.
The turtle, now named Violet, is suffering from an open wound on her front flipper and a condition known as “bubble butt,” which prevents her from diving and causes her to float at the surface. A veterinary assessment will determine whether there are internal infections and the best course of treatment for both her external injury and internal condition.
All rescued turtles are protected species, and it is illegal in Malta to keep them as pets. The Wildlife Rescue Team reminds the public that only trained volunteers with the proper permits and equipment should handle injured wildlife. Anyone spotting an animal in distress is urged to call the rescue team on 99999505.
Wishing you a speedy recovery, Violet!
