Photos of 'damaged' Marsa flyover are causing a social media uproar
What do you think of the sitch?

Malta is currently undergoing a major infrastructural project in the form of the Marsa Junction Project, which will see the building of seven flyovers in the area. The first two flyovers were opened in September and the others are expected to follow suit in the coming months.

But, after spending thousands on the first two, it appears that there may have been some complications... though whether they are cause for concern remains unclear. Last week, a photo of a deep-looking pothole on one of the flyovers surfaced on social media that sparked an initial uproar, with many people getting into heated discussions about it. Some even poked fun at it, like this local illustrator, taking a sarcastic jab at the situation.

And just an hour ago, politician Robert Arrigo posted another controversial photo to his page, this time of the underlying expansion joint that seems to need some TLC. “This is the Marsa Flyover with small stones falling from above. This cost €40,000 to inaugurate,” he says.

Locals were quick to comment on the post, with some being unable to resist cracking a joke or two. “Maybe it’s the result of heavy dancing during the inauguration of the bridge!” said one user, while someone else said, “Calculations were made: structure will hold till next election.”

Malta's Minister for Infrastructure Ian Borg was quick to retaliate with his own post to explain the situation. Political jabs aside, he clarifies,  “Those supposed stones that are falling are nothing more than appropriate material such a foam that was temporary installed until the expansion joints are attached in the coming weeks. Workers removed them a few days ago so that gradually the process of attaching the expansion joints can begin, followed by the last asphalt layer on the currently opened flyovers and the next one we’ll be opening.”

Seems all is well and above board then... till the next photo surfaces at least!
