Open day! Visit the historic chapel of Santa Marija ta’ Bir Miftuh this September
It’s all happening on the 7th of September from 9.30am to 12pm.
On Saturday, 7th September, the eve of a public holiday, the Chapel of Santa Marija ta’ Bir Miftuh in Gudja will open its doors to the public from 9.30am to 12pm. Visitors will have the chance to explore one of Malta’s finest and best-preserved fifteenth-century parish churches.
Built around 1430 and declared a parish in 1436, this free-standing chapel once served several villages before Gudja’s parish church was constructed in 1676. Its simple rectangular structure reflects the growing confidence of medieval Maltese stonework, while inside, its treasures reveal centuries of devotion and artistry.
Among the highlights are the remarkable frescoes uncovered in the late 20th century after being hidden beneath six layers of lime. The most striking is The Last Judgement, painted across the western wall and divided into three vivid tiers. Another unique feature is the portrait of a woman holding a lily, believed to be a benefactress from the Bonici family.
Since 1970, the chapel has been under the care of Din l-Art Ħelwa, which has overseen vital restoration works, including the conservation of frescoes and the rebuilding of war damage.
This open day offers an opportunity to admire its history, art, and quiet beauty.
