Floriana will be the place to be next Sunday, as the event ‘Ġenna ta’ Ġonna’ will be returning for another year of garden-filled fun! Often dubbed a ‘Heaven of Gardens’, as the suburb possessing the largest number of public gardens on the island, Floriana will be opening up its gardens between 10am and 8pm, alongside a host of other museums and historical buildings.
Activities on the day will include a locality guided tour by vintage bus, departing from Pjazza E.S. Tonna and stopping at the Kind George V Recreational Grounds, Notre Dame Gate and the Msida Bastion Historic Garden. There will also be a Crafts market at the Mall garden and a closing concert by the folk group Kantera.
Gardens open to the public will include Sa Maison Gardens, with its stunning views of Marsamxett Harbour. St. Philip’s Garden (also known as The General’s Garden), partially built on the site of the old Floriana Underground Train Station, and Argotti Gardens, home to the Botanic Section maintained by the University of Malta.
Other notable attractions open for visits – some with guided tours – include the Wignacourt Water Tower and the Vilhena Underground Cistern. Floriana's historic churches will also welcome visitors, including Sarria Church, designed by Mattia Preti and featuring seven of his paintings.
Free walking tour guides for the Floriana Heritage Trail will be available to help visitors discover all of Floriana’s hidden gems – pick yours up on the day from the Local Council stand at Pjazza E.S. Tonna.
