The man in red who cared for every creature, big and small.
The MSPCA has shared a moving tribute to Nicholas Marson, fondly remembered in the community as ‘Mr. Red Man’, who passed away earlier this week.
In their message, the MSPCA wrote: ‘The MSPCA extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Nicholas Marson, our ‘Mr. Red Man’, for leaving a rare and lasting mark, defined by compassion, integrity, and a deep love for animals. In a world where innocence is too often lost to greed and self-interest, Mr. Marson stands as a reminder of the values we must protect. His kindness reached even the smallest and most vulnerable creatures, showing us that how we treat animals speaks volumes about who we are. Through his example, he has shown that empathy is a strength, and that choosing compassion can leave a legacy that endures. His mark will remain with the MSPCA and our community as an inspiration to live with care, generosity, and purpose.’
For the people of Gżira, Nicholas was part of the daily life of the town. Known for feeding the cats, birds, and ducks around Gżira and Manoel Island, he also took the time to water the plants along the promenade, keeping the area beautiful for everyone.
Local author Mark Camilleri recalled his distinctive presence: ‘He was always cycling around, usually laden with odds and ends – presumably for feeding the cats and ducks – and always decked out in red. Different shades, different items, but always red.’
Nicholas’ quiet acts of kindness left a visible mark on the community, and his legacy will live on, not only in the animals he cared for, but in the example he set for others: to lead with empathy, give without expecting, and make the world gentler in whatever way we can.
Had you ever seen him cycling around Gżira?
