On 5th July, Heritage Malta is offering a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating history and natural beauty of Filfla and Malta’s iconic Grand Harbour during a full-day boat excursion around the island’s eastern and southern coastline.
Participants will uncover the many secrets of Filfla, the small uninhabited islet south of Malta. The tour will delve into how the island was formed, the origins of its name, its attraction to pirates throughout history, and its later use as a military bombing target.
Today, Filfla serves as an important refuge for various species of plants and wildlife. Visitors are encouraged to keep a lookout for seabirds, turtles and even dolphins, which are occasionally spotted in the surrounding waters.
The excursion will also highlight the rich history of the Grand Harbour in Valletta, regarded as one of the Mediterranean’s most impressive natural harbours. Having served as a strategic maritime centre since Neolithic times, the harbour has played a crucial role under the Phoenicians, the Knights of St John and the British Empire. Its impressive fortifications, including Fort St Elmo, Fort St Angelo and Fort Ricasoli, stand as reminders of its military significance.
Today, the Grand Harbour remains a vibrant part of Malta’s heritage, combining historic architecture with modern marinas, cruise terminals and lively waterfront areas overlooking cities such as Birgu and Senglea.
The boat will depart from Sliema Ferries at 10:00 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m. Although there will be no landing or swimming around Filfla, the return journey includes a swimming stop at the picturesque Il-Ħofriet. Refreshments and snacks will be available on board.
Tickets cost €45 for adults, €40 for seniors and students, and €35 for Heritage Malta members.
