Hungover in Malta? Here’s some grub that’s bound to make you feel better
What’s your go-to hangover meal?

Benjamin Abela

Waking up hungover is one thing everyone dreads.

When crisis hits, you can try guzzling water, swallowing paracetamols, or sleeping it off, but generally, nothing will bring you back to life like a good old plate of food.

In light of that, we thought we'd help you find a way out of your misery by listing a handful of snacks, foods, and meals that we recommend consuming should you ever wake up hungover in Malta...

Kebab

A trip to the kebab shop is how most nights out tend to conclude nowadays, and we honestly wouldn’t have it any other way.

Should you not have the time to get your paws on a mixed wrap the night of, savour this Turkish delicacy the morning (or afternoon) after. Just be warned that you might need another nap after finishing it off.

Some kebab spots to get you started: Kebab Factory; Falafel Street; Kebab Ji.

Fish & Chips

A sizeable portion of salty chips alongside a deep-fried slab of fish is bound to get you up and energised after a long night out.

The good thing about fish and chips is that it packs a fair share of vitamins and nutrients whilst also being absolutely tasty. Win-win.

Some fish and chips spots to get you started: Fins & Gills; Le Poisson; Sea Salt.

Pastizzi

It’s always a good time to eat a pastizz – be it for breakfast, as an afternoon snack, or as part of a hungover lunch.

Although we tend to stick to the two most popular iterations of this Maltese delicacy (ricotta and peas), there are many types of pastizzi that are sure to satisfy your hungover cravings: we’re talking chicken, anchovy, and Nutella, to mention a few.

Some pastizzi spots to get you started: Crystal Palace (Serkin); Maxims; Sphinx.

Burgers

When you first wake up after one of those nights, nothing will get you out of bed like the thought of biting into a juicy, cheesy, and saucy burger.

Forget your run-of-the-mill fast-food burger and treat yourself to a proper hunk of meat at one of Malta’s countless up-and-coming burger joints.

Some burger spots to get you started: Hugo’s Burger Bar; Bandit; Badass Burgers.

A proper breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day – more so when you’re dead-set on recovering from the previous night’s antics.

Push your cereal bowl to the side and treat yourself to a plate of buttery eggs, a salty breakfast sandwich, or a freshly baked pastry at one of Malta’s many breakfast-brunch restaurants.

Some breakfast spots to get you started: Marelli Café; Danny’s; Emma’s Kitchen.

Smoothies

If you’re looking for a food item that will actually help your body recover from the hellish pits of a hangover, a smoothie’s the way to go.

Ice cold, deliciously sweet, and bursting with fresh fruit, a smoothie will help you rehydrate whilst replenishing your body’s vitamin reserves.

Some smoothie spots to get you started: Oakberry; Dr Juice; JUJU.

Bread & sandwiches

Legend has it that eating a couple slices of bread after a heavy night of drinking will help soak up all that excess alcohol…

Whilst we’re not too sure about whether that statement actually stands true, there’s no denying that a fat sandwich chock-full with cold cuts, melty cheese, and fresh veggies would taste absolutely heavenly when hungover.

Some bread / sandwich spots to get you started: Grano; Submarine; Toghma.
