Let the season guide your plate! Discover January’s freshest catch from Malta’s seas
Fresh, local and sustainably sourced!

In January, Malta’s seas are at their most generous, offering fish and seafood at peak freshness and flavour. Cooler waters and responsible fishing practices mean that many species are landed in excellent condition, straight from the deep to our local markets. It’s the perfect time to enjoy what the season naturally provides - fresh, local, and sustainably sourced.

Thanks to the hard work of our local fishers, January brings a rich variety of seafood to the table. Popular catches include red mullet, European hake, little tunny, and Atlantic chub mackerel - fish prized for their firm texture and clean, delicate taste.

Seafood lovers can also look forward to dusky grouper, red porgy, and common pandora, all ideal for comforting winter dishes. Shellfish and cephalopods shine this month too, with giant red shrimp and octopus offering bold flavours that suit slow cooking and traditional recipes.

Choosing seasonal fish isn’t just about taste - it’s a conscious choice that supports local livelihoods and helps protect marine ecosystems. When we buy what’s in season, we reduce pressure on overfished species and enjoy seafood at its natural best.

This January, let the season guide your plate. Visit your local fish market, ask what’s fresh, and celebrate the incredible bounty of our seas!
