A former oil storage site in Birgu has been transformed into a modern public garden, offering a new green space for residents and visitors.

Covering approximately 1,500 square metres, the garden features pathways lined with Mediterranean plants, shaded seating areas beneath pine trees, and facilities such as benches and picnic tables. Designed in consultation with the Birgu Local Council, the space aims to meet the needs of the community while encouraging social interaction and outdoor activities.
The site also carries historical importance, having once formed part of the Knights’ fortifications before being converted into an oil depot during British rule. After its abandonment in 2010, the area fell into disuse until this redevelopment.
Sustainability is central to the project, with systems in place to conserve water and reduce maintenance. Recycled spring water will supply the garden’s reservoirs. A 400-square-metre arena at its centre will host events and educational activities, reinforcing the garden’s role as a vibrant community hub.
