He was joined in the Press Conference by Gozo Minister Hon. Clint Camilleri
Speaking from Gozo’s General Hospital to address the government’s strategy for the sister island, Health Minister Chris Fearne revealed that 123 beds will be added to the hospital’s pre-existing arrangement, with half the amount already delivered.
Immunocompromised patients in Gozo are currently being treated at Barts Medical School across the road from Gozo's General Hospital, with staff also being trained to deal with COVID-19 on the premises. A total of 80 elderly people being treated at the hospital have been moved to a nearby location to maximise bed space at the hospital. Additionally, an oxygen tank supply has been effected for Gozo should the need arise for it.
Gozo has so far reported only one case of COVID-19, with authorities insisting it was an isolated case and stressing that no further cases have been reported since. Authorities revealed that should Gozitan patients test positive, they would be transported to Mater Dei through a special charter service.
Reflecting on the situation, the Health Minister said: “I hope all these preparations are for nothing and we will not need this capacity, but we have to be prepared.”
