Beat the crush of deckchairs and towel hogs in Malta’s most beautiful secluded spots.
When the heat kicks in, the best way to cool off in Malta and Gozo is by taking a dip in the Med, but if you're not much for the island's busiest beaches, there are a few lesser known gems to discover during your stay. Here are some of my favourites.
1. Fomm ir-Rih
Fomm ir-Rih, near Bahrija, is only accessible through a steep footpath, but the treasure you’ll find at the bottom makes it all worthwhile. The isolated bay with crystal-clear waters is surrounded by lush countryside and framed by steep cliffs. It’s a sure bet for a quiet day at the beach.
How to get there: Coming from Rabat, follow the signs to Bahrija until you get to Bahrija’s main road, then, take the first right. Drive for about 2 km until the road reaches a downhill, and turn right – this will take you to a small car park. From there, small footpath leads to the bay, though do be careful – it’s a bit precarious!
2. Peter’s Pool
A rocky spot that takes a little walk to get to, this gorgeous beach near Marsaxlokk has become better-known in recent years, so it’s not quite as hidden as it used to be, but if you arrive at a reasonable time, you’ll be sure to find a good spot.
How to get there: Follow the narrow road towards Delimara Lighthouse until you pass the power station. You'll soon come across a sign indicating 'Peter's Pool'. Follow the rough track to the small parking area but beware – it’s quite rough!
3. San Blas Bay
Wondering whether the hike down the hill (and then back up again) is worth it? Trust us, it is. The clear waters and burnt sienna sands of this solitary beach spot in Gozo are not the only positives the beach has going for it – it’s also free from pesky beach vendors.
How to get there: Coming from the village of Nadur, access to this beach is via a narrow road. The latter part of the road is not accessible by car, so you’ll have to park and make your way down the steep part on foot.
4. Wied il-Ghasri
Wind your way down the steps cut into the rock, which lead down to a tiny but perfect shingle beach. Wied il-Ghasri, also in Gozo, is stunningly picturesque, and also a good snorkelling spot when the waters are calm.
How to get there: Coming from Victoria, take the right off the roundabout at the village square and left at the first stop sign. Turn right when you get to a small chapel, and drive (carefully) on the narrow road until you reach a smaller road heading to the left. Park here and head down to the valley.
5. Kalanka Bay
Certainly one that you won’t find on most tourist guides, Kalanka Bay is a hidden gem located at the tip of Delimara in Marsaxlokk. It’s incredibly tranquil, and boasts azure blue sea which is perfect for snorkelling – but be warned, there are no facilities here, so you’ll have to pack your own food and drink!
How to get there: Coming from Marsaxlokk, follow the road toward Peter’s Pool until you pass the parking area. Then, head straight on to Delimara.
