Summer in Malta is all about sun, sea, and sandy toes but sometimes, popular beaches can feel more like a busy boardwalk than a peaceful escape. If you're looking to beat the crowds and discover a new side of the islands, now’s the best time to discover some beaches you may not have heard of, before it gets too hot to move a muscle!
Remember, much of Malta’s western coast is populated with cliffs, which can be beautiful yet dangerous, particularly in areas where pathways may have been eroded by the elements. If the path seems unsafe, best to steer clear!
Here are some lesser-known beaches are just a good pair of walking shoes away:
1. Fomm ir-Riħ Bay (Limits of Mġarr)
Just under a set of some dramatic cliffs, this remote pebble beach is a gem for those willing to tackle the steep descent. The hike starts just off the Baħrija-Mġarr road, and although the trail can be rugged, the reward is a tranquil stretch of blue that feels completely untouched. Perfect for snorkelling and serious relaxing – you’ll need it after the challenging hike!
2. Slugs Bay (Mellieħa)
Despite the not-so-alluring name, Slugs Bay is a peaceful spot nestled in the Għadira nature area. Accessible by a short but rocky hike from the nearby Red Tower or the Armier road, this small sandy cove is ideal for those seeking calm waters and minimal company.
3. Imġiebaħ Bay (Selmun)
Found near Selmun Palace, this hidden beach is a favourite among locals looking for serenity. Getting there involves a bit of a walk through dusty paths surrounded by garigue, but the views – and the clear water – make it more than worth the effort. There are no facilities here, so pack light but smart.
4. Għajn Tuffieħa’s cliff path to Ġnejna Bay
Għajn Tuffieħa is a popular beach, but fewer people take the cliffside path that leads all the way to neighbouring Ġnejna Bay. The walk offers stunning views of the coastline, and once you arrive, you can enjoy Ġnejna’s quiet waters and shaded areas, without the hassle of trying to park there! It’s not exactly remote, but the journey keeps it calmer than its busier neighbour.
5. San Blas Bay (Gozo)
If you don’t mind a challenging downhill trek, San Blas is one of Gozo’s most picturesque spots. Smaller than Ramla but with the same copper-toned sand and inviting waters, this bay has a raw, wild beauty that makes it a must-visit for nature lovers. Watch your knees though – the path is STEEP!
A few tips before you go:
- Bring water, and lots of it.
- Wear sturdy shoes – these paths aren’t made for flip flops!
- Keep beaches clean – pack a plastic bag and take everything back with you.
- Check accessibility if you’re going with kids or less-mobile hikers.
Sometimes, the best views come after a bit of effort, and in Malta, that often means a hidden cove waiting at the end.
Which of these do you hope to explore in the coming weeks?
