Cleaner beaches ahead! Smoking ban set to take effect at Golden Bay and Ramla l-Ħamra
It’s all happening on the 1st of January 2026.

We’re starting the new year with a bang! From 1 January 2026, two of the Malta’s most popular beaches will become cleaner and more environmentally friendly following the introduction of a new smoking ban.

Ramla tal-Mixquqa, commonly known as Golden Bay, and Ramla l-Ħamra in Gozo will prohibit smoking across the beach, except within clearly designated smoking areas.

As announced earlier this year, the measure aims to tackle the persistent problem of cigarette butts littering sandy shores and polluting the sea.

Visitors to both beaches will be informed of the new rules through prominent signage at all entrances, clearly stating that smoking is not permitted outside the designated zones. These smoking areas will be visibly marked and equipped with containers to safely dispose of cigarette waste.

The ban will be strictly enforced by the police, wardens from the Local Enforcement Systems Agency (LESA), and officials from the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), the Environmental Health Directorate (EHD), and the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA). Anyone caught smoking outside the permitted areas will face an immediate €150 fine, with no warnings issued.

The initiative was inspired by discussions with children and focuses on addressing the environmental damage caused by cigarette butts, which take years to decompose and pose serious risks to marine life. Designated smoking zones will also help to reduce pollution and better protect fragile marine ecosystems.

Do you agree with these decisions?
