If you were one of the lucky ones that slept right through the tremor, here’s what happened at about 3am this morning. A tremor hit parts of the Maltese Islands and measured between 4.3 and 4.5 on the Richter scale.
The Civil Protection Department confirmed the news on their Facebook page, saying that the 4.3 Richter scale was felt shortly after 3am. The University of Malta’s Seismic Monitoring Research Group said it registered at 4.5. No damages have been reported so far.
Those who felt the tremor described it as a “scary” experience, feeling their homes “shaking” with the tremor lasting about “four seconds.”
"The shaking woke me up. I live in Sliema. I felt the bed moving and heard some glass furniture shaking. It literally lasted a total of four seconds but it was a scary experience," one local told us.
A smaller scaled tremor was actually felt just hours before around 8.23pm according to the Univeristy of Malta’s Seismic Monitoring Research Group. This tremor, they said, was documented in the south of Malta and was of a 3.3 magnitude.
