Team Malta delivered an outstanding performance at the Mediterranean Bowling Championships held in Ankara, Türkiye, clinching the top spot and returning home with an impressive eight medals.
The team, made up of Mauro Anastasi, Cynthia Frendo Duca, Sue Abela, and Nicholas Muscat, set the pace early in the team event, finishing the first three games in the lead ahead of Cyprus, Italy, and the host country.
Though Italy briefly overtook Malta in the second set, a stellar 857 game from the Maltese side put them back in front. The final game sealed the deal: a powerful 963 score (averaging 240.75 per player), putting Malta nearly 200 pins ahead of Italy overall.
This victory not only earned the team gold but also qualified all four bowlers for the Masters event.
Frendo Duca had a remarkable tournament, securing bronze in the all-events category, gold in the team event, gold in the women’s doubles with Sue Abela, and silver in the Masters after a narrow loss in the final to France’s Celia Jeanne Delafosse.
On the men’s side, Nicholas Muscat claimed bronze in the Masters after falling in the semi-final, adding to his team gold and doubles silver with Mauro Anastasi. Meanwhile, Mauro dominated the final rounds, winning gold in the Masters and collecting four medals overall - two golds and two silvers.
Malta topped the medal table at this year’s championship, reclaiming its spot as the leading nation.
