Bring on the sun! 20+ activities for the ultimate summer bucket list on the Maltese Islands
What to do this summer 2019… there’s so much going on!

Kristina Cassar Dowling

The summer is back kids and, boy, is it going to be a wild one! There’s so much to do, so we listed 20+ activities here, but trust and believe there are so many more wonderful things to get you going! Let’s go!

Gozo

Sightseeing

Let’s start with Gozo. Never a dull moment here - hit the main attractions and be a tourist for the day. You can head back home once your Maltese accent adopts a precious Gozitan twang! Love it!

Culture hit

Maybe get your culture vibe on and hit the local ceramic spots, art displays or temples out there…always room to learn something new huh?

Foodie trail

Food! Always the answer! Food hop your way across the island, get pastizzi, enjoy a ftira by the sea, maybe a typical Gozitan maxokk… anything…really!

Beaches

Whether it’s Ramla l-Hamra for the day or discovering new spots such as Mgarr ix-Xini, Hondoq ir-Rummien or Nigret, you’re bound to have a beachy day in Gozo - pack your snorkelling gear, there's so much to see!

Church hunt

This could take all day but selecting the key churches on the sister island could result in a great adventure. Ta’ Pinu is a must, no matter how many times you’ve visited but smaller remote churches such as that in the parish of Gharb or the small Munxar church are so very cute!

Weekend break

A yearly (at least) activity that always gets the gang together! Book that Gozo farmhouse, throw yourselves a party but don’t forget to clean up after. Be respectful!

Drinking sesh

Fresh off the boat, short walk up the hill, sit yourselves down, order a round, then another, and another, and another! You’re not driving tonight so live it up!

Comino

Trek

What about the smaller island? Comino is great in the summer, but why not shake things up a little bit this year? Hit the island for a trek in the morning or evening, before the sun gets too hot, and discover some new spots you never visited. Pack some water and a snack for this one!

Lounge

Comino is the ideal spot to forget about your earthly worries. Just kick your shoes off, grab a fresh pineapple cocktail, sit on your deckchair and do nothing. Bliss!

Snorkel

The sea-life in Comino is gorgeous, you could be lucky to spot a starfish or sea horse but the most likely things you will see are beautifully coloured fish nibbling at your toes.

Hotel stay

If you’ve never done it, you definitely should - a hotel break in Comino is something else. You have the luxury of waking up on a sparsely populated island, to a turquoise blue sea that, for a moment, could be solely yours!

Camping

Hotel too pricey? Take your camping gear and pitch on this magical island! The night is always young when you’re the only ones in the area; crank up your music, enjoy a few pints, you won’t be bothering anyone!

Beach days

Back on the mother rock! Beach days here are immense and sought after, with so many places to choose from! Even though you might be sharing your spot with a few (hundred) others, zone out, find your zen and enjoy the heat!

Water sports

Grab a jet ski on your beach day, book a parasailing experience, rent a canoe, there’s so much going on and you can access it all on this tiny rock we call home!

Shopping

If you don’t think of it as a sport, accept it as a necessity - why not get your shopping done in a fully air-conditioned venue though? Lessen the stress of it all?

Clean-ups

This one is a must! Whether you’ve done your part or not, get your hands dirty and the seas clean this summer. Collect your trash and other less responsible people’s trash! Let’s make Malta a cleaner place to live!

BBQs

You’ll need a permit for this one, and you might also need to check which locations allow you to cook out on in public. Wherever you go, clean up after your party and encourage others around you to do so too.

Pub crawl

This one is always welcome! Autumn, winter, spring or summer…but summer is the best! Mostly, because a night of drinking is usually followed by a sneaky jump into the sea to cool off and sober up!

Summer fling

Hmm, this can’t really be forced right? Or, can it? Well, whatever your approach, if you’re single and ready to mingle, get your fling on, it’s all in good fun!

Theatre

Shakespeare usually graces us with his performance in the park every summer, but so do some other theatre houses; keep your eyes peeled for tickets for the summer and early autumn activities.
