Autumn getaways! UK remains Malta’s most popular destination in the month of October
Coming in second was Italy, which saw a 1% growth over 2024.
The latest figures from Malta International Airport (MIA) have confirmed that the United Kingdom continues to hold its spot as Malta’s most popular travel destination throughout the month of October.
This reflects both Maltese travellers heading to the UK in search of a true autumn experience, and British visitors escaping to Malta for one last dose of sunshine before winter sets in.
October officially marked the end of the summer season for the aviation industry, but it was also a month of growth and new beginnings. MIA welcomed inaugural flights from Gothenburg and Palma de Mallorca during the final weekend of October, adding to the airport’s expanding network.
In total, the airport’s new winter schedule now includes flights to 86 destinations, with the UK maintaining its strong lead. It accounted for 20% of the 978,445 passenger movements registered in October alone.
Coming in second was Italy, which saw a 1% growth over 2024. Rome’s Fiumicino and Catania’s Fontanarossa airports were the most popular routes for Maltese travellers. Germany followed in third place, with Munich and Frankfurt driving over 84,000 passenger movements.
Poland emerged as the fastest-growing market, boasting a remarkable 60.6% increase compared to last year, while France rounded out the top five.
Looking ahead to winter, the European Travel Commission reports that Mediterranean destinations are becoming increasingly popular, with a 7% rise in interest compared to last year. Stable, pleasant weather is now one of the main factors influencing Europeans’ travel choices during the colder months, making Malta an even more appealing off-season destination.
