It seems like the damning effects of climate change have finally reached our little islands…
A study led by Prof Aaron Micallef and carried out by scientists from the University of Calabria and the University of Malta concluded that Malta’s one of the poorest countries in the world when it comes to water resources.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, it has just been announced that our country’s set to lose a whopping 16 per cent of its currently available groundwater volume in the next 80 years.
Seeing as how groundwater supplies almost half of Malta’s drinkable water, this can prove to be a major issue for us if not tackled ASAP.
Not yet convinced that this is a consequence of climate change?
Well, the three main factors that have influenced this loss are an increase in water demand, less rainfall, and a rise in sea-level.
At least two out of those three can be easily attributed to climate change, although it’s the increased demand that has had the worst impact on our groundwater.
These findings were elicited from a study funded by the European Commission, the University of Malta, and the Helmholtz European Partnering Initiative.
