As Malta continues to endure an intense heatwave, the Civil Protection Department (CPD) is urging the public to take extra precautions to reduce the risk of outdoor fires, warning that the current weather conditions have created an extremely dangerous environment.

With soaring temperatures and dry vegetation across the islands, CPD firefighters have already responded to several grass and countryside fires in recent days. Each incident places emergency crews under immense pressure as they work in extreme heat to protect lives, homes, farmland and Malta's natural environment.

The department is reminding everyone that many outdoor fires are preventable and that simple actions can make a significant difference.

Motorists are urged never to throw cigarette butts from vehicles or onto the ground, while visitors to the countryside should avoid leaving behind glass bottles or other litter that could contribute to a fire. Landowners are also encouraged to clear dry grass and overgrown vegetation where it can be done safely, helping to reduce the amount of combustible material.

The CPD is also warning against lighting fires or burning garden waste during the current heatwave, as even the smallest flame can rapidly spread out of control. Drivers should also avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems and catalytic converters can easily ignite vegetation.

The public is reminded to dispose of waste responsibly and never leave combustible materials in rural areas.

Anyone who notices smoke or a fire should call 112 immediately and, if it is safe to do so, provide the exact location to emergency services.

The Civil Protection Department stresses that every preventable fire puts firefighters, communities, wildlife and the environment at unnecessary risk. By taking simple precautions, everyone can play a part in helping keep Malta safe throughout this period of extreme heat.
