A new chapter for a historic gem! Vittoriosa Square transformation is now complete
Birgu underwent a €3 million regeneration project

Lyndsey Grima

The heart of Vittoriosa, one of Malta’s most historic cities, has undergone a stunning transformation following the completion of a €3 million regeneration project. Recently inaugurated, the project marks a significant investment in Malta’s cultural, touristic, and urban future.

Led by Infrastructure Malta in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority, the regeneration project has given Vittoriosa Square a complete facelift. The initiative prioritised both heritage conservation and modern accessibility. Once a car-dominated space, the square has now been largely pedestrianised, offering a more welcoming environment for families, residents, and tourists alike.

The project included the replacement of essential underground services such as drinking water and drainage systems, along with the installation of a new rainwater collection network. Abandoned reservoirs and cisterns discovered during excavation have been restored and integrated into this system.

Urban furniture, trees, bicycle stands, and planters have been added to enhance the square’s aesthetic and functionality. New, energy-efficient lighting and preparations for electric vehicle charging stations have also been incorporated.

Archaeological sensitivity was paramount, with works carried out under strict supervision. Historical paving materials discovered in the Collachio area were preserved and re-used, maintaining the square’s authentic charm.

During the inauguration, the importance of investing in authentic experiences that distinguish Malta was emphasised, noting that such projects enhance both tourism and community life. The Birgu square can now be a model of blending infrastructure with heritage, creating a vibrant, people-cantered public space.

With its revitalized square, Vittoriosa is now better poised than ever to welcome visitors while celebrating its rich past and vibrant present.
