Where has it gone? Mellieha’s ‘Madonna tal-Ahrax’ removed for restoration
The statue was in a depleting state.

If you lately decided to take a peaceful walk alongside the Ahrax area in Mellieha you probably noticed that something is missing…

The Our Lady statue that has overlooked Mellieha’s Ahrax area for decades has been removed so it can be restored to its original glory.

It has been battling the open weather and its forces for many years, leaving it in quite a pitiful state.

In the process of restoration, a geological study was carried out on the surrounding area. It was decided that it would be best if the statue would be moved five metres away from its original place due to the crumbling cliff’s edge.

The project is being carried out by the Restoration and Preservation Department.

The ‘Madonna tal-Ahrax’ statue was first built in 1870 and has been standing near the cliff’s edge for over 150 years.
