No sign of a second summer! Sunny days return after strong winds, but Malta’s temperatures remain below average
Autumn has officially checked in!

If you were hoping for a second summer across Malta and Gozo, it looks like you’ll have to wait (and hope) a little longer. Despite the sunshine making a comeback after some blustery days, temperatures are expected to stay below the seasonal average for early October.

A storm system currently over Italy is moving east towards Greece, bringing with it a couple more days of strong northwesterly winds across the Maltese Islands, reaching highs of force 5 to 6. While the weather will gradually settle towards the end of the week, forecasters say that the cooler air will linger.

Although rain seems to have missed the islands this morning (Monday 6th October), strong northwesterly winds (Force 6) should be characterising the rest of the day. Tomorrow and Wednesday 8th October should see the winds calm slightly (Force 5–4) with mainly sunny skies.

As we approach the weekend, Thursday and Friday are expected to be calm and mostly clear with occasional high clouds, with the latter persisting throughout the weekend.

Maximum temperatures will hover around 24°C to 25°C, around 2°C below the seasonal norm, while minimum temperatures are set to drop from 20°C to around 17°C by midweek, feeling even cooler in the wind. So if you haven’t already, make sure to get out that light jacket!

Sea temperatures, on the other hand, remain warm at 25°C, making it still pleasant for a quick dip.

The UV index has dropped to moderate, ranging between 5 and 6, so while the sun’s rays aren’t at their strongest, a bit of sunscreen is still a good idea if you’re spending the day outdoors, particularly if you have sensitive skin.

So while we might not be getting a return of summer heat anytime soon, this mix of sunshine and breezy, mild days is the perfect setup for autumn strolls, coastal hikes, or simply enjoying a coffee al fresco without breaking a sweat – enjoy it while it lasts!

Are you still crossing your fingers for a second summer?

6th October 2025
