After a night of heavy rain, the country woke up to some intense flooding, relentless traffic, and some worrying infrastructural damage…
…but one locality in Gozo was hit harder than most!
As 99.1mm of rain fell over Ghajnsielem, the quaint Gozitan village saw its streets turn into streams and its cars into submarines.
The situation was so dire, that Ghajnsielem mayor Kevin Cauchi even advised residents to avoid certain areas – “Pjazza tad-Dehra, Triq Wied Rghajjes, and Hamri Street.”
Mayor Cauchi went on to reassure residents that “workers will start to clean up as soon as the water clears.”
Having said that, Ghajnsielem wasn’t the only victim of last night’s savage storm.
Gozo’s Marsalforn Valley seems to be overflowing into adjacent streets, whilst other villages all over Malta have witnessed “collapsed rubble walls, downed power lines,” and of course, “flooded streets,” the Maltese Islands Weather page wrote on social media.
Infrastructural damage aside, the islands’ farmers are particularly worried about the impact last night’s rain will have on their livelihood.
It now seems like the situation will only get better, as Maltese Islands Weather highlighted that “the meteorological situation will improve gradually.”
Even though the weather will remain cloudy throughout the next three days, the heavy storm is set to clear as a high-pressure zone from Tunisia approaches Malta.
Stay safe out there!
