Mental health awareness has been on the rise, and the taboo is slowly being broken. Thanks to organisations like Richmond Foundation, people with mental health issues can find a safe haven to talk, and get the help they need.
In a recent video posted to Facebook, Richmond Foundation features a number of personalities, namely Claudia Faniello, Matthew Paris, Daniel and Ylenia, Claire Agius Ordway, and Kurt Calleja, who talk about their experiences with mental health or supporting loved ones, and raising continual awareness.

Personal accounts
“When I was 15 years old, I began experiencing the first symptoms of schizophrenia. I began hearing voices and seeing things that I would only be able to see,” says activist Matthew Paris. “These voices began affecting every aspect of my life in a negative way. For example, I couldn’t sit for my exams because I would find it very hard to focus.” Matthew is not only better than ever, but is currently working with Richmond Foundation to help other people with mental health issues.

“Close family and friends of mine have experienced mental problems, and I know how difficult it is to ask for and seek help,” says local singer Kurt Calleja. Claire Agius Ordway chimes in, saying we need to take care of our mental health no matter the age. “As a mother, I understand the importance of mental health, as well as the physical, because they go hand-in-hand.”
“One in every four people have at one point or other in their lives, experienced mental health issues,” begins radio presenter Daniel. “The most common ages that symptoms begin to appear are between 14 and 25 years of age,” continues Ylenia. “Mental health problems are very common, as one can see, but there’s hope. There’s help, and it works,” says Daniel.

#WalkforRichmond2019
Richmond Foundation is organising a walk to stand up to the stigma and raise awareness about mental health. Happening on 6th October, you can register here to be part of this event, starting at the Madliena Chapel in Dingli. “By walking with us, you will not only help us to increase awareness on mental health problems, but also supporting us in sustaining the services we provide to those who do not have the means to pay,” the post reads.
