Birdlife Malta recently shared a captivating video shedding light on the misunderstood European Bee-Eaters. Despite their name and the misconception surrounding their diet, these colourful birds play a crucial role in the ecosystem.

While they do consume bees, their diet extends to various other insects, including hornets and wasps, which are natural predators of bees.

Contrary to popular belief, European Bee-Eaters aid bee populations by primarily targeting the weakest individuals, making them easier prey. Scientific studies have debunked the notion that these birds pose a threat to bee populations, emphasising instead the detrimental impact of human activities on bee populations.

The video, featuring footage by Aron Tanti, is a reminder of the delicate balance within nature and the importance of understanding and protecting species like the Bee-Eater.

Have you ever seen a Bee-Eater bird in action?
