The first stone of the breakwater was laid by King Edward VII in 1903.

A photo shared by Paul Debattista on the Facebook group, ‘Our Islands Photography and Art’ shows construction work being carried out on one of Valletta’s landmarks that still stands today, the breakwater bridge.

However, it is not quite certain when the photo was actually taken.

Some were speculating that the photo was taken when the bridge was originally built, thus sometime in the first decade of the 1900’s.

Nonetheless, this might not necessarily be right.

Others were thinking that this photo is not over a century old but was instead taken some time in the 1950’s.

This is because the crane spotted in the photo is suspected to a crane by the name of ‘Clive’. The crane was bult in 1910's, a significant number of years after the bridge and the breakwater were built. Thus, the crane in the photo might not be putting the bridge in place but was instead removing the “undamaged spam of the bridge”, according to Tony Grech, one of the commentators in the post. He continued explaining that this process was carried out in the 1950’s, which means there’s a likely possibility the photo was taken then and not beforehand.

The breakwater originally started being built in 1903, with King Edward VII laying the first stone

Such a project desperately needed to be carried out as Valletta’s Grand Harbour was constantly under the threat of strong winds, which were minimising the full capacity and use of the harbour.

Today, the breakwater still stands there, protecting the Valletta Grand Harbour from the same strong winds.
