Unfinished and unfiltered: Maltese artist opens the door to his creative process in ‘In Search of the Unknown’
A bold and introspective new exhibition by Maltese artist Darren Tanti, titled In Search of the Unknown, opens on Friday, 20th June at 7:30pm at il-Kamra ta’ Fuq, and promises to challenge traditional expectations of the gallery experience.

Curated by Melanie Erixon, this project offers a rare and intimate look into the creative process, rather than presenting a neatly finalised collection. Unlike conventional exhibitions that focus solely on resolved pieces, In Search of the Unknown functions more like an open studio; a dynamic, evolving space where experimentation, failure, reflection, and breakthrough moments are laid bare for the viewer.
The exhibition captures the unpredictability of artistic exploration, sometimes fluid, sometimes chaotic, and highlights the often-unseen journey artists undertake in pursuit of meaning. Visitors can expect to see glimpses of the artist’s earlier works, new stylistic directions, abandoned ideas, and moments of revelation, all woven into a narrative that celebrates the act of creation itself.
Darren Tanti, born in 1987, is a renowned figure in the local and international art scene. His practice blends hyperrealism with experimental digital-academic techniques. His notable appearances include exhibitions at the Venice Biennale and multiple editions of the APS Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale. His works form part of prestigious collections such as MUŻA and the Embassy of Malta in Washington, D.C.
Darren’s commitment to art education is evident in both his career as a Senior Lecturer and in this exhibition’s focus on process. For him, understanding how art is made is as important as the final piece itself.
In Search of the Unknown runs until 6th July, inviting all art lovers, students, and curious minds to witness the raw, honest, and ever-evolving journey behind artistic creation.
