TWO alien jellyfish species spotted in Maltese waters
Don’t worry none of them are deadly…

Emma Galea

If you happened to take a stroll along Malta’s beaches or brave the waters for a quick dip, it probably didn’t take you long to notice that the sea was full of jellyfish.

This is because at the moment it’s breeding season for the mauve stinger jellyfish also known as the common jellyfish species in Malta.

But apart from the impressive number of mauve stingers breeding in Malta, two uncommon jellyfish alien species have been spotted.

One of them is the nomadic jellyfish which has quite the painful sting and is best treated with baking soda and the application of ice packs.

The second one is commonly referred to as the Australian spotted jellyfish but it is thankfully harmless and not a danger to anyone.

The jellyfish were seen by marine enthusiasts Ryan Curmi, Brandon Schembri and Edmond Schembri.
