If you're planning a beach trip to one of these bays, make sure you're up to date with these new turtle protection measures.
As Malta’s summer continues to bring beachgoers to the island’s beautiful bays, visitors to Ġnejna and Għadira are being reminded of new restrictions put in place to protect nesting sea turtles in the area.
Starting from yesterday at 6:30pm, additional measures have been introduced on both land and sea around the turtle nesting zones at these popular beaches. These restrictions, set by the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA), will remain in place until the hatchlings make their way to the sea.
Rangers will be increasing patrols in both bays, and beachgoers are being asked to respect the protected zones and the volunteers from Nature Trust – FEE Malta who are working tirelessly to safeguard the nests.
Here are the rules for the entire bay (including the sea):
- No camping – this is always illegal at Ġnejna and Għadira.
- Organised activities with more than 10 people require prior clearance from ERA.
- No loud music is permitted in the area.
- No fishing is allowed while restrictions are in place.
These are the rules for the Emergency Area (the zone surrounding the nest):
- No outdoor cooking in any form, at any time.
- No umbrellas or structures that cast shade over the nesting area.
Additional rules between 6:30pm and 7:30am:
- Do not place any objects in the red zone that may hinder hatchlings from reaching the sea.
- No digging in the sand in or near the nesting zone.
Volunteers on-site are trained and authorised to give instructions – please respect their guidance to help ensure the safety and success of this rare natural event.
This is an exciting and delicate time for Malta’s marine biodiversity, and public cooperation is key. Everyone is encouraged to do their part to protect our nesting turtles and make this a safe journey for the next generation of sea life.
You can access full regulations for Ġnejna and Għadira on the ERA website, and for further updates, follow ERA and Nature Trust – FEE Malta on social media.
Let’s keep the beaches safe and comfortable for all visitors!
